Basic steps to secure your server

Keeping your server secure is essential — even if you don't have business critical or sensitive data in it. Having security flaws may lead to compromising your server and using it as a botnet controller, sending our SPAM or stealing your information.

You don't have to be security expert to secure your VPS for most of the attacks, just follow these 3 steps:
1. Don't use simple passwords. Here in yourserver.se we've conducted tests: a virtual server with root password 12345 was discovered and used as network abuse point in less, then 2 hours. For example, use our simple password generator for your needs and remember to have a unique password for every service and website you use.

2. Keep your software up to date. At yourserver.se we use OpenVZ virtualization, so you don't have to worry about kernel updates — we do that for you, but you still need to update software you run inside your VPS. We get abuse emails about hacked Wordpress, Joomla!, phpMyAdmin and Magento systems every day. Having the lastest available software versions will help you face 99% of common attacks.

3. Use dual authentication. Most of providers offer two-step authentication: login + password and one time password from your device. So do we. You will find two-factor authentication under Security Settings at your Account Details.
